INTRODUCTION OF POET:
Thomas was the prominent poet of Elizebathen age. He was not only a poet true poet but also a scholar, lawyer, doctor of medicine and musician. He got fame through poetry and music. "The man of life upright" is one of his best poems.
THEME:
In this poem he plays high tribute to the dignity of an honest and straight forward person who leads a very simple and Honourable life. Thomas says that an honest person never ambitious nor he is disappionted by any sorrow. He always looks to God for help. In last two lines the poet philosophically expresses that an honest man looks upon the world as an inn.
LANGUAGE:
The language of the poem is simple and easy to understand. The poet says a lot in a few words, all beautifully chosen and aptly used. Some of the words have philosophical touch, such as 'inn' well-spent age pilgrimage' and horrors of the deep etc.
STYLE:
The form and style of the poem match the subject. The poem contains six stanzas. Each stanza consists of four short lines. The second line is rhyming with the fourth.
While first and second lines are unrhymed. The rhythm is regular and nearly all pauses fall at the end of the lines.
ELEMENTS OF VERSE:
The poet has not used similies but he has metaphors in a beautiful way such as "He makes the heaven his book" and the earth his sober Inn".
