Author: Bertrand Russell is a prominent name of twentieth century in the field of writers, thinkers, philosophers and mathematicians. He has written many books in philosophy and mathematics. His more popular works are his essays, in which he has dealt with politics, society and life in general, looked upon from the scientist's point of view.
Summary: In this essay Bertrand Russell has discussed the growth of materialism and the new spirit of materialism in Asian Countries. He says that alternation of power and dominance has been occurring between East and West.
From the Immortal. In the earliest history east was dominated and then with the rise of Greece, week became powerful. Then with the fall of Roman Empire West became week and East dominated during the time of Caliphate. Later came the drawn fall of Islamic state and Culture. Western Europe has now become dominant and powerful and took up the leadership of the world.
After the second world was this dominance of West seems to slip from their hands and new nations of Asia were appearing on the map of world. Author shows his deep concern in this situation. He welcomes the formation of such independent states. He says that new world is split it two blocks and there is a cold war between them. This cold war may become the cause of Third world War. So if these newly born nations have to save themselves from the sufferings and destruct ions of war, they will have to save neutral. These Asian powers will soon form a third block and be bulwark against either of the two blocks starting a war.
According to Russell, Asia is very important continent because It has the home of three distinct civilisations i.e. Islamic Chinese and Hindus.
Russell also discusses the aspects of science and machinery. He says that this is the age of science and machine. In this age, science is trying to superimpose upon the older cultures. So we should try to preserve our culture, and in this age we have forgotten poetry, music, art, love and simple joys of life. So in this regard he advises Asian countries to preserve their culture. He also talks about the Industrialism. The power of England, American and Russia is totally based upon machine production. The advance of science has made it essential for Industry to be carried on through machines. He also says communism is very dangerous for these newly born countries.
In the end Russell says that Asian Countries should learn from the West the spirit of scientific research and should reject the desire for bringing the smaller nations under their control and exploit ion.
